I love the fact that they’re just straight up twisted. I don’t think it’s a sense of rebellion I think it’s more so people just being who they are and not afraid to be that. They had great stuff going on like Woodstock, and I feel like our generation is headed that way, you know? With all of this viral stuff that’s going on with breakout artists like Odd Future and Lil B, it’s cool that people aren’t afraid to be themselves. Back then, the movement was really based on free love and coming together and music. ![]() But as far as my thoughts on rebellion and stuff, I just feel that we’re the modernized 60’s. It was just really cool because with the storyline and with what I was doing, it would be perfect to pay homage to her on her birthday. The song has been covered by many artists since the 70s, and I was extremely impressed with the way Phlo paid tribute to this classic so adeptly – weaving the words Jim Morrison sang onto a hip-hop canvas.Well, I didn’t drop the album on 4/20 because of it being the day of marijuana it was a tribute to Edie Sedgwick because she was born on 4/20. This is a cover of The Doors’ popular song of the same name. It’s almost as if these sounds knew when they were born that they would later be married to each other, the way they fit so snugly it’s as though they lived a past life together as lovers. ![]() She blends so many influences together, but does it in such a careful and ladylike manner that it doesn’t sound noisy or cluttered or mismatched, it sounds like it was meant to be. It’s more the way she approaches her music. Granted all I’ve heard is an EP, but there is a certain darkness to her brand of R&B/Soul or whatever box you want to put her sound in – and it’s not just the darkness that I’m attracted to, although it does allude to there being more to her than meets the eye. The most interesting thing for me about Phlo, besides her striking beauty, is her music. As told to Rolling Stone magazine Phlo found similarities between her life and that of Youthquaker model Edie Sedgwick, she found herself immersed in this world of Andy Warhol, Twiggy, Bob Dylan, 1960s London, cigarette smoke, rock n roll, sexual liberation, mod fashion and of course developed a certain style and texture that lends itself quite strongly to that era. Well for one, she is completely influenced by the 1960s Youthquake movement, and is even quoted as saying that she wishes Diana Vreeland ( Vogue editor in the 60s) if she were still alive would say to her “Phlo, you can be a youthquaker!”. Now you might be wondering what Youthquakes have to do with Phlo Finister? ![]() It wasn’t even that I assumed her music would sound terrible, I just figured that it was going to sound like something I didn’t want to listen to.īoy was I wrong. I just assumed she was going to be of the odd future tumblr aesthetic. I read a few pieces on her late last year, ‘new artist to look out for’ ‘hot new artist’ etc etc etc. I have been avoiding Phlo Finister for a few months. Ok, I’ve digressed from my point a bit so let me just get right into it. Not young like Willow Smith young, I mean as far as I’m concerned listening to her is tantamount to musical paedophile. I am constantly looking out for new music, and I am completely open to new sounds and new artists, but I always raise an eyebrow when faced with a new young artist. Call me an old fuddy duddy, a music snob, a purist or whatever it is you want, but it’s the truth. Now I realize that I have simplified in one sentence a very complex social construct, but for pop culture purposes there really is no need to over intellectualise the entire thing. And every single generation, whether they care to admit it or not, borrows from previous generations, adds their own flavour (sometimes) and voila a new culture is born. The first and most widely documented ‘Youthquake’ occurred in the 1960s, though I would argue that every single generation of young people experiences a shift in culture of sorts, perhaps some too small to warrant any kind of social murmur but each equally as important.Įach generation of young people wants to define who they are based on their current social, political, economic and importantly their cultural reality. The Mirriam Webster dictionary defines a youthquake as a shift in cultural norms influenced by the values, tastes, and mores of young people. ![]() For example an incoming connection allowing to bypass your firewall. Obviously they are reading their messages - why would they choose not to answer my simple request and send me the promised login credentials after purchase? - From product to customer service: nothing is great about FontBase. So they saw all my e-mails! So: I get a quick refund, I get a quick response to this review. And lo and behold, within less than 24 hours I get a refund - the refund confirmation comes in form of an answer showing all my messages to them, in which I ask them for the credentials. But when they chose not to answer my queries at all and I realised that the product wasn't good anyway, I asked for a refund. In the meantime I had figured out that I could reset the account password as they had apparently used my purchase e-mail to create the account. I then e-mailed them two more times over the course of a week. As it was a Friday I figured maybe an answer would come on Monday. After a few hours I e-mailed them on the same day asking for my credentials. No credentials came, I obviously checked spam, etc. When I purchased the software, the information was that credentials for account login would be sent immediately after purchase. Update: It is funny to me that FontBase reacted to this review within less than 24 hours. The UI is nice, the price is right, but there are some of those smaller grievances that have us looking to move back to Connect Fonts (formerly Suitcase Fusion) It's also problematic for Teams due to point #2. Lack of Sub-Folders for Collections make things a bit messy for organization. There's an entire thread on it in their Support Forms called "Google Drive - Watch Folders Issues" unfortunately we can't add links in reviews. It's a huge pain point for working with teams when using Google Drive. The only workaround for this is to have FontBase installed locally, and then each team member can use a "Watched Folder" for Google Drive, however, then Collections are no longer shared/synced. This means you can’t watch your System fonts, OR, if you have your fonts organized outside the FontBase root and want to “Watch” those folders for changes vs. Watch Folder Issue - Google Drive: If your FontBase root folder is on your Google Drive (for working with teams to sync collections), you CAN NOT create Watch Folders. Font don't always activated on when loading documents in programs like Photoshop where they have been used - this is inconvenient as we have to open FB and toggle them on to get them to work. ![]() Overall I like FontBase but there are a few issues. I cannot recommend enough the work these guys are doing, if fonts are your thing. I'm sure it's possible this feature is available elsewhere, but I'd be surprised if it was done better and for free. Any font I add into my watched folders immediately becomes available for activation in FontBase on both machines and easily locatable. These then become available when I sync my Macbook which has the same FontBase setup for when I work remotely. I have manually sorted my fonts into folders named by style categories on my iMac, which I sync to my cloud backup. While I really love the speed and minimal fuss approach the developers have taken with the UI, for me, the ability to 'Add' watched folders is the deal sealer. I renewed my annual subscription for my second year now just the other day. Although there were some features the paid version included that I felt would be useful, I mainly felt that a piece of software that is so well thought out, so well supported and also reasonably priced, deserved my hard earned dollars. Then I stumbled onto FontBase, tried out the free version and loved it. For years I struggled with the clumsiness of Font Book on my Mac, mostly because it was free. As a graphic designer, font management is critical, especially as I have over 4000 fonts on my system. But they are good at recognizing the voice from the microphone. But they still cannot cope with dictaphone recordings, where there are extraneous noises, the interlocutor is heard quietly or poorly. Modern speech recognition technologies have come a long way. And if you leave voice notes often, then it is simply unrealistic to quickly find the information you need or skim through it. The dictaphone is bad for this: the recording will then need to be deciphered and translated into text. Sometimes it is easier and faster to dictate the text so as not to forget an important thought or task. If you work in digital marketing, you constantly need to interact with text: jotting down ideas, tasks, describing concepts, writing articles, and much more. Transcription is an automatic or manual translation of speech into text, more precisely, recording an audio or video file in text form. However, there are solutions that can significantly speed up and facilitate the translation of speech into text, that is, to simplify the transcription. No software can completely replace the manual work of transcribing recorded speech. Decades later, we can ask questions and control devices with our voice, thanks to virtual assistants and smart home technology. Old science fiction shows depicting the future made a big deal out of voice control. For example, we could want to represent each number as a full byte, so 10 would be 0A in hexadecimal, and with the approach we have used it will print A. So, we cannot specify how many characters we want to use to represent our number. Note however that this method doesn’t add leading characters in any representation. You should get an output similar to figure 1, which shows the number 10 printed in the three different bases, with the expected values.įigure 1 – Output of the program, showing the number 10 printed in the three different bases. Then, when the procedure finishes, open the Arduino IDE serial monitor. To test the code simply compile it and upload it to your device. We use again the println method of the Serial extern variable, passing as first input the value 10 and as second input the constant OCT. In this case, the number 10 is represented as 12. To finalize, we will test this for another commonly used base which is octal. So, we will call the exact same println method but this time we will pass the constant HEX as second argument, as can be seen below. The number 10 in hexadecimal is represented as A. Next we will print the number in hexadecimal. We are going to use this method instead so the different representations of the number 10 are printed across different lines. Note that this also works if we use the println method, which simply adds a newline at the end. So, in order to print a number in binary, we simply need to call the print method on the Serial extern variable, passing as first input the number and as second the constant BIN. In this base, the value 10 is represented by 1010. We will start by printing it in binary format. In this example we will be using the number 10, but you can test with other values. We will now print the same number in different bases. ![]() This method receives as input the baud rate, which should later match the one we are going to use on the Arduino IDE serial monitor. We do this by calling the begin method on the Serial extern variable. We will start by opening a serial connection.
